  introduction
The first meeting of the South West Education Benchmarking Group was held in January 1999 with 12 representatives representing 10 local authorities. Since that inaugural meeting the group has met regularly and its membership of South West Authorities has continued to grow. The current membership list includes the following authorities:

BANES
Bournemouth
Cornwall
Devon
Dorset
Gloucestershire
Hampshire
North Somerset
Oxford

Poole
Plymouth
Somerset
South Gloucestershire
Swindon
Torbay
West Berkshire
Wiltshire

The Group was formed to provide a support role for those engaged in benchmarking activities recognising the key drivers of best value and performance management linked to the AC/OFSTED inspection framework. A protocol for the sharing of information amongst authorities was produced and participating authorities have signed up to the protocol.

Sub-groups have been set up representing many of the services delivered by Local Education Authorities. These provide the opportunity for those interested in a particular service to meet with others interested in benchmarking the same area of service provision. Each group has a lead officer, or 'Champion'.

For 2002 three additional sub-groups are being set up. They will cover:

  • Schools Library Service;
  • Support Services for minority, ethnic, travellers and speech and language services;
  • Student Awards and Pupil Services.
Service groups now meet on a regular basis and reports provided by the relevant 'Champions' are included on this website. These identify the purpose of the groups, its activities, which authorities have taken part, the 5 key indicators in that Service area, and the contact of the group from whom more detail is available.
